Imprisonment does not work - it’s not cost effective, practical, & doesnt “rehabilitate” anyone. I’ll spare “lecture” on who benefits from warehousing, but simply putting people away for X number of years only stops them from committing a crime for the same amount of time, nothing more or less.
Jim Lewis of The New York Times Magazine wrote, “Adjusted for population growth, there are four times as many people in prision this year as there were in 1980. About 67% of prisionsers who are released are arrested again within 3 years.”
There has been much talk of legalizing marijuana to save money, but a further look is needed to look @ mandatory sentencing and other legislation that’s warehouses our population and is:
“an expensive way of making bad people worse”
